Coming Out

Coming out is the process of openly sharing your sexual orientation or gender identity with others, often as a step toward living authentically.

What Is Coming Out?

Coming out refers to the process of recognizing, accepting, and sharing one’s gender identity with others.

For transgender people, this means disclosing that their gender identity does not align with the sex they were assigned at birth.

For example, someone who is AMAB may come out as female — sharing that their true identity is a girl.

Why Is Coming Out So Hard?

There are many reasons why coming out can feel difficult. Below are some of the most common ones:

Please note these are only a few and there are many more.

Fear and Anxiety

Worry about how others will react, fear of rejection, or concerns about safety are common.

Fear of rejection

Worrying that family, friends, or peers may not accept your identity.

Safety concerns

Risk of bullying, harassment, or violence in school, work, or community spaces.

Internal pressure

Struggling with self‑acceptance or feeling anxious about being “different.”

Practical challenges

Navigating school, work, healthcare, or legal systems that may not be inclusive.

There are typically two main ways of coming out, both outlined below:

Out!

Out means openly sharing one’s transgender identity with others, similar to “coming out” in the LGBTQ+ community.

Stealth!

Stealth means a transgender person lives in their affirmed gender without disclosing their transgender history.

Transitioning

Now that we’ve explored coming out, the next step is to discuss transition — what it means, the different forms it can take, and the support available along the way
