Cis-Gender
Cisgender refers to individuals whose gender identity matches the sex they were assigned at birth.
What dose Cis-Gender mean ?
Cisgender (often abbreviated as cis) refers to individuals whose gender identity aligns with the sex they were assigned at birth. So for example Cisgender women Assigned Female at birth (AFAB) and identifies as a girl or woman. This is an example of a Cis-Gender person.
Gender Non Conforming
While discussing cisgender people it's also important to remember that cisgender people can be gender non conforming.
This is defined as "gender nonconforming if they don't conform to the gender expression, presentation, behaviors, roles, or expectations that society sees as the norm for their gender. People of any gender identity can be gender nonconforming"
For example, a cisgender woman (AFAB) who prefers traditionally masculine clothing or a cisgender man who enjoys activities stereotypically associated with women is still cisgender if their gender identity aligns with their assigned sex at birth.
Cis-Gender people are just "normal" people?
- This is talking about people who believe in Cisnormativity which is the belief or assumption that everyone is cisgender, and that this alignment between body and identity is the only “correct” or “natural” way to be.
- In today’s society, there are many different genders and gender identities. People should be able to live their lives to the best of their ability without facing barriers created by prejudice.
This is why legislation such as the Equality Act 2010 is so important — it recognises and protects trans people and others whose identities do not fit cisnormative expectations.
